Neben den bekannten Leica-Modellen If bis IIIf  zeigte Leitz auf der Photokina  1954 die Leica M3. Sie ist das Ergebnis einer mehr als zwanzigjähriger Zusammenarbeit der erfahrenen Leitz Techniker und Wissenschaftler mit Spitzenkönnern der Fotografie. So ist diese Neuentwicklung in engstem Kontakt mit der Praxis entstanden. Wie jedes Leica Modell ist auch die M3 ein kompromissloses Bekenntnis zur Präzision. Bei Leitz bestimmt bekanntlich nicht der Preis die Qualität, sondern die Qualität den Preis. Daher konnte die Leica M3 mit einem Höchstmaß an Bedienungskomfort ausgestattet werden. Vor allem wurde das Sucherproblem in einer besonders eleganten Weise gelöst. Der Leuchtrahmen-Messsucher der Leica M3 zeigt die Objekte seitenrichtig in fast natürlicher Größe in einem großen Suchfeld. 1995 wurde in dem Sondermodell M6-J  „40 Jahre Leica M“, bestehend aus der M3 und M6 an den Beginn der Leica M-Serie gedacht.
